The history of Zanotta is the story of sixty years of insights and records of hazards and curiosity, and especially of special results that few companies can boast: with over 550 products manufactured, Zanotta has a place of its own in the big world of design. Company and a difficult to imitate catalog, whose philosophy is "producing culture and profit at the same time", with the conviction that "the furniture industry must endeavor to anticipate future needs, not merely to satisfy the passive public demand" . An assumption which still remains valid, and who sees in "beautiful, enjoyable and lasting," the goal that everyone is looking for in design today, and Zanotta considers essential for the objects of his collection, each of which for the life of all days.
Founded in 1954 by Aurelio Zanotta, the company has initially concentrated around the production of sofas and armchairs, surpassing the traditional craftsmanship of the upholsterer workshops - which normally referred the production of upholstered furniture - and moving toward a design "caught" , among the companies that have written the first significant pages in the history of Italian design. Thanks to the meeting with some characters now legendary, intercepted thanks to the curiosity, instinct and the charism of its founder, Zanotta had embarked on a new path, starting to become interested in new technologies and new materials, and simultaneously proving sensitive to artistic research purest, but especially by opening its doors to the great designers. And so in the early seventies begin some forward thinking, and for those years clearly visionary, new editions of projects. Zanotta approaches to the work of the father of Italian Rationalism, Giuseppe Terragni, and within a few years come into the catalog Sant'Elia chair, the chair Lariana and Madness, for years an icon of the company.
At the same time, boldly and gambling, it produces the equally famous Mezzadro the brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, who had been the prototype since the exhibition of Villa Olmo "Colors and Shapes in the House today." And choose from the past still existing projects will become over time one of the red wires recurring Zanotta, fished out of Max Bill objects, Giuseppe Pagano, Gino Levi Montalcini, Piero Bottoni, Carlo Mollino, Joe Colombo and others. All "historical pieces" that have allowed Zanotta to build a bond of continuity of their collection with a glorious past, and give shape to a project aimed at achieving within their catalog a micro-history of the evolution of Italian Design in the field of Mobile, since the beginning of the twentieth century. Zanotta had also realized that the world of contemporary art could be an important oxygen to the design and the domestic universe. And in the early eighties Zanotta had begun to think of a real catalog of objects from the sign even more free, where unite the research and less aligned experimentations of artists and designers, and where to bring together the wisdom of master craftsmen capable of make objects on the border between art and design.
A season that will be called Zabro, and that in 1989 it will become Zanotta Edizioni: a place full of surprises, where they shine together acrobatic thoughts of Bruno Munari and Alik Cavaliere, Fortunato Depero and Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass and Richard Dalisi, Pierre Charpin and many others. A collection that in 1991, for his "strong cultural depth," got a Mention of Honour of the Compasso d'Oro. Objects, all of which are inspired by the Italian artistic tradition, and freed from the constraints of strictly industrial production, show a strong labor component "handmade", often catching techniques in disuse, as the inlay or decoration pictorial, or other new and experimental. All series of small objects, with a limited number that increases its value over time. 51 award-winning products. 8 international awards. 3 Compasso d'Oro awards. 297 products in the permanent collections of 47 museums in the world. With the introduction of formal innovations, typological and technological, many Zanotta products are now true icons recognized in design history, mentioned in books and exhibited in major museums of decorative arts objects such as Zanotta Sacco, Zanotta Mezzadro, Zanotta Shanghai Zanotta Quaderna, Zanotta Tonietta, Zanotta Leonardo and many others, all best and long seller for decades, current and brilliant today.
Zanotta was among the first companies to understand the need to promote and support cultural activities in the form of exhibitions and conferences, events not directly related to production, but more broadly to the research and study of the different areas of design and creativity. And so over the years Zanotta has supported many initiatives to spread the development of issues related to furniture and object design to housing, adding to its productive activities intense cultural promotion activities, and participating in more than 380 exhibitions and the most significant critical reflections of the last forty years. Show the results of their work is not just about exposing the production objects, came to fruition after months and sometimes years of tests and experiments. It also means planning to introduce an ad hoc way to propose and communicate, synergy and affinities, their new wealth. And this aspect Zanotta has always given special attention, by now legendary productions of the seventies, brave and provocative, the proud Achille Castiglioni productions of the eighties and nineties, rising to more domestic images but not the least refined of Bertero- stand Panto-Marzoli of two thousand years, until the new path undertaken with the Calvi Brambilla-study projects.
The Zanotta universe has given the interest of hundreds of articles on major newspapers and magazines, on custom publications and on major television channels and web. Zanotta The production was well received hundreds of cultural exhibitions, and the subject of three in-depth studies that gave rise to three different volumes: "Furniture as architecture", written by Stefano Casciani and published by Arcadia in 1984; "Zanotta. Design for passion ", written by Raffaella Poletti and published by Electa in 2004, and" Design: 101 Zanotta stories ", written by Beppe Finessi and published by Silvana Editoriale in 2015. They are 127 authors from 18 different nations who have left projects specimens in the archive, in memory and in the catalog of Zanotta, writing so the best chapters of their personal history of furniture designers. Because the originality of the project is always at the base in the choice of products intended for production: and take to heart this goal has allowed Zanotta to propose in an original way the work of the great masters in his time forgotten, along with that of some new talent, often "discovered" for the first time, as in the case of Roberto Barbieri in the nineties and Damian Williamson and Frank Rettenbacher in more recent years.
Zanotta a collection characterized by a great heterogeneity, articulated today in more than 200 products including chairs, sofas, beds, chairs, tables, furnishings, tables, various furniture, outdoor products and numbered limited editions. The attention to the care of every aspect of the Zanotta production, and promptly craftsmanship performed in many of the processing steps, allows Zanotta realize even highly personalized objects, so basically only, according to the special demands of a sophisticated clientele. Executions "tailored" ranging from the choice of "customer" fabrics for the production of upholstered furniture, up to the creation of "special parts", in the agreement between the customer's needs, the designer's sensibility and the catalog of Zanotta same.
The great diversity of languages in the Zanotta catalog allowed the products to fit with agility, culture and taste the best examples of contemporary furniture, the houses designed by great architects to hotels, restaurants, museums and the most important representative offices made over the last thirty years. And to a certain type of supplies destined for a more sophisticated kind of contract, that the Zanotta catalog is particularly suitable when it is necessary to offer in addition to the technological and construction quality even different varieties of styles to suit the different identities of best international design. The production of objects takes place largely within the establishments of Nova Milanese, extended over an area of 16000 square meters, with about 90 employees, half of which occupied directly in manufacturing, real craftsmen specialized in the particular skin and tissue processing for upholstered items made internally. Zanotta also take place within the company's assembly operations and finishing of some models of chairs, desks, tables, cabinets and realized by the most technologically advanced suppliers of Italian production, largely in the area of northern Italy: this Zanotta production is 100% "Made in Italy".
